We have highlighted the Dianella amoena (Matted Flax-lily), a nationally threatened grassland species once prevalent in the Wollert area, as a major thematic sculptural element. The five main sculptural elements were installed in late December 2010 as part of the Stage 30 landscape works (design: Ground Control in collaboration with the Agency of Sculpture (Benjamin Gilbert); detailing, fabrication & installation: Agency of Sculpture). These elements are now part of a constructed landscape incorporating recycled basalt fieldstone walling and pavement, indigenous and other native plantings, RCZ protective fencing, and other treatments.

The Dianella amoena thematic will be supplemented in future stages with design references to the Golden Sun-moth, another threatened species once common to the basalt plains grasslands. In addition to sculptural representations and interpretation, revegetation of selected areas with Wallaby Grass (Austrodanthonia species) will re-establish habitat for the Golden Sun-moth, encouraging its return to the area.

Lyndarum @ Wollert is currently a 14 stage development totalling over 800 lots.

The new creek profile, designed and adjusted to suit on-site conditions during construction by Watsons Pty Ltd, has resulted in a ‘natural’ creek alignment and profile, complete with many rock-lined base-flow channels, rock riffles and three main ponds within this section of the creek. The construction phase of these works to create the main re-profiled channel has been a drawn out exercise due to the frequent rainfall and storm events during the early and particularly latter parts of 2010, testing the redesigned flow capacity of the new creek cross-section. These works are now complete.

Selected large tree boughs from dead trees removed during the excavation works were installed in late 2010 into the creek edges for additional habitat creation. The 450 metre long concrete shared path, jute matting and planting operations are currently underway. The landscape works to this section of the creek are being constructed by CC Specialised Landscape Services and have an estimated completion date of early March 2011.

The push-button BBQ and picnic tables offer a great location for a leisurely sunday lunch, close to a modern playspace and open grass area.

A Cor-ten steel sculptural wall element by Benjamin Gilbert (Agency of Sculpture) provides a quirky contrast to the clean geometry of the reserve layout.

Planting areas and grass are all irrigated with buried drip lines using recycled water from two large water tanks installed as part of the reserve development. Much of the ground plane planting is a sequence of Dianella spp. Lomandra spp. and Poa spp. with selected other hardy drought-tolerant species in selected areas. Tree species are generally exotic including Chinese Elms (proven in the estate), a selected form of Ash, plus a grove of non-fruiting Olives. The grass species used is kikuyu, drought & wear tolerant and self-repairing.

Construction of the first phase of the creek was completed in 2007. The primary works in this second phase of the creekworks was to create a ‘high-flow’ channel to carry storm event flows exceeding the capacity of the original creek (retained). These works commenced on site in November 2009 and were completed in March 2010. The works are currently under maintenance.

Ground Control has been instrumental in redefining Beolite Village as a more sustainable development, through proposed urban design improvements to the original village master plan. We have reinforced that the overall village layout and detail design must optimise social opportunities and the creation of real community, as well as addressing economic and environmental issues.

In the planning process for the Village, we have carefully reviewed what is important to mature aged citizens — safety and security; easy access to services, facilities and transport; opportunities for socialising and for privacy; simple considerations such as shade and shelter from wind and rain; recognition of seasonal change and the passing of time.

Often overlooked issues like path gradients are of critical importance — as part of the master plan revisions, we have designed a graded pedestrian network for Beolite Village suitable for aged ambulatory access, integrated with a road layout providing maximum walkable permeability through the village.

Development Status
Stage 1 of the Beolite Village development (civil works infrastructure and the first group of housing units) is complete and the first residents have moved in.

Advanced palms were transplanted to the site in August 2009 and construction of the reserve commenced in earnest mid January 2010. The reserve, now formally known as ‘Peace Square’, is now predominantly complete, awaiting finishing touches and the fixing of the Victoria Cross citation extracts to the storyboard walls.
